GOLDEN SPIKE
SALUTE TO THE CHINESE WORKERS OF THE CENTRAL PACIFIC RAILROAD
INTRODUCTION & MOVIE TREATMENT
At the end of the 19th century, Zhaozhao Lin, a village girl from Sze Yup, Guangdong, China, transforms into a “Gold Mountain Bride” when she marries Shien Chen, who found their fortune in gold mining, and eventually becoming respected local businessmen in San Francisco, US. As fate would have it, they assume a central role in building the Central Pacific Railroad – a brutal, arduous task. Zhaozhao Lin makes the journey across the Pacific to join her husband. On the ocean crossing, she meets Roland, who falls in love with her. While Zhaozhao Lin and Shien Chen struggle to build their new life together, they suffer through harsh working conditions and constant harassment from anti-Chinese forces. Shien Chen pays the ultimate price in his quest to build the railroad, and he entrusts Roland with Zhaozhao Lin before his death.
Zhaozhao Lin creates a map of the location of Shien Chen’s treasure – with a value equal to the wealth of a rich nation – and hides the pieces as a game for future generations. One hundred and fifty years later, the gears of destiny turn for a young Chinese couple, William Chen and Na An, when they discover Zhaozhao Lin’s “game.” In a story interwoven between the centuries, their fun treasure hunt and William’s fight to save his family’s restaurant embroils the couple in a conspiracy to steal priceless Chinese artifacts from a museum, and their hunt for the treasure becomes a quest to uncovering forgotten history and their own lives.
